Alibaba has unveiled its own generative AI model, Tongyi Qianwen, and plans to integrate it into all its apps, including workplace messaging app DingTalk and voice assistant Tmall Genie. Meanwhile, China's Cyberspace Administration has published draft rules for managing generative AI services, which require adherence to "core socialist values" and data security and personal information protection laws. Those who breach the rules could face fines or criminal investigation. The move comes as governments worldwide are grappling with how to regulate generative AI technology, amid concerns about its ethical implications, effect on national security, jobs, and education. Analysts suggest that Beijing's new rules will slow down progress in exchange for a more socially responsible deployment of the technology, while also creating obstacles for foreign companies looking to provide AI services in China.
