There is a lot of hype regarding the new AI tools that are literally exploding in the technology sector, they are hyped so much, clearly because they have reached a new level of innovation.
With tools like ChatGPT, Midjourney and Synthesia, AI is revolutionizing the way we are productive and especially creative content can be created 10-100 times faster than before.
However, not many know that we have been using many AI tools for YEARS.
1. Recommendation Systems
Platforms like Google, YouTube, Instagram and Facebook, they all have been using AI for YEARS, to show you the right content on their platform. AI is nothing more than a set of machine learning algorithms that learns about our behaviour, only that now it has been able to learn so much that the recommendations are on point.
2. GPS
GPS systems have been using artificial intelligence as well, to show you the quickest routes on your way. Each statistic of people using apps like Google Maps or Apple Maps is recorded and saved, this way these apps can also tell you how long your ride will take approximately. That's why Uber knows when your ride will arrive.
3. Chatbots
Chatbots have been revolutionizing the way companies can handle customer service requests, now with ChatGPT this will reach a whole new level. However, Chatbots have also existed for many years now and have become a normal tool for companies to facilitate customer requests.
4. Machine Learning, Deep Learning & Neural Networks
The concept of training models with algorithms to perform Machine Learning and develop neural networks has also existed for many years. Training a model with a set of data is a huge area in Data Science and without this, todays ChatGPT and Midjourney, DALL-E and all other AI tools would NOT be possible. These algorithms are embedded in almost EVERY bigger social media platform to categorize data and learn from customers behaviour, to make better recommendation, or to show better ads.
5. Facial Recognition
Ever unlocked your phone with your face? Yea, thats also supported by AI. How else would your phone decide that you are you and not someone else.
6. Autonomous driving
There are many self-driving cars already that learn how to drive and how to recognize traffic participants with use of technologies like Computer Vision and Generative AI models.
7. Generative AI models
Generative AI models are the fundamental technologies that support almost all modern AI tools nowadays. There are Generative Adversarial Networks called (GANS) and Variational Autoencoders called (VAES).
8. Robotics
Have you ever seen how precise robotic machines can already perform operations such as lifting a object or even shaking someones hand? That is also AI that we have been using for years. Thanks to training the robots with many experiments and data sets they know exactly how much force to apply and which motion to perform, with consideration to laws of physics like speed and gravity.
9. Optical Character Recognition (OCR)
There are tools that automatically detect text on a screen, this is only thanks to AI and machine learning algorithms.
10. Computer Vision
Training a computer to recognize a dog and differentiate it from a cat takes a huge amount of data science and machine learning. Autonomous driving is powered by this, recognizing traffic participants, differentiating between people, objects and at the same time calculating at which speed these are moving and predicting what could possible happen. Computer vision is one of the most fascinating applications of AI because the better it gets, it can become way more precise than a human eye, differentiating and recognizing way more objects with less "actual" vision ability.
These are just some examples of all the AI technologies you have been using for YEARS. You have been using Google or Apple Maps, YouTube, Google, so many applications based on machine learning and artificial inttelligence. Now with the rise of new AI tools, people think AI is something entirely new, well it isn't.
